CHKO Litovelske Pomoravi

The Natural Environment
Geomorphologically speaking, Litovelsko is created by the Hornomoravská valley , which is a depression of ground situated outside of the Carpathian mountains ; Haná represents its flattest and lowest part. This community is practically forestless, with the most fertile mould and populated by the majority of the microregion’s inhabitants. The territory’s official name is Uničovská plošina, Středomoravská niva and Prostějovská pahorkatina. The more undulated part of the region is created by the Eastern Sudete’s highland of Bouzov, then followed by a lowland – Mohelnická brázda.

One of Litovelsko’s curiosities are the meanders created by the Morava river, the underground karstic phenomenas (Mladečské and Javoříčské caverns), and, in fact, the whole basin of Morava, which belongs to the drainage into the Black Sea. The river here is typical for its seven lateral arms, creating a natural island near Střeně and landes near Mladče. The two-fifths of Morava’s length runs through flood-plain forests, largely belonging to CHKO Litovelské Pomoraví. Another interesting fact is that Morava does not run through any community except for the royal city of Litovel. Our ancestors used to build their habitations farther from the river, being the source of frequent floods in spring time.
